Games call-up for reservists

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond yesterday called on 2,100 reserve troops to boost the security force at the Olympics.

The part-timers will be part of the 13,500-strong military contingent at the Games — more than the number in Afghanistan.

They will join the total force of 23,700 military, private guards and volunteers.

Mr Hammond promised MPs: "Only those reservists who volunteer and who have the support of their employers will be called out." They will get financial help if needed. The MoD said the military forces "will contribute to ensuring a safe, secure and enjoyable 2012 Olympics".

Emergency services will start a huge exercise in London tomorrow to prepare for the Olympics.

Meanwhile sports fans who have missed out on 2012 tickets will get a 24-hour head start when the final 1.3million go on sale in April.

Anyone who applied without success in the first two ballots will be guaranteed "first bite" before the tickets go on full public sale.
