Royal Marines Reserves

Nottingham Detachment, RMR Merseyside

RMR Merseyside opened a new Detachment in Nottingham in 2008. Co-located with the Royal Naval Reserve in HMS Sherwood, Nottingham Detachments (Not Det) opening enabled the Unit to expand into the East Midlands where there had been no previous RM presence. Improvement works at the Detachment were completed and the first intake of recruits formed the Detachment section of 108 Troop which commenced in September 2008. Since then two more intakes have started and completed training with the fourth having formed up in September 2011. The Detachment is now looking to recruit its fifth intake for the 2012 recruit troop.

Not Det was initially formed with ex regular Royal Marines who have established a healthy core of some 15 ranks from which to develop the Detachment.  Initially they were listed as a general duties Detachment carrying out rifle troop training and providing support to the Unit’s Recruit Training team.  In 2010 the Detachment began to prepare itself for training to become a Sustained Fire (SF) Troop. This Specialist Qualification (SQ) will increase the opportunities for the ranks of Not Det.

As part of RMR Merseyside Not Det ranks are able to train with the unit at weekends on a regular basis as well as every Tuesday evening. There are also a number of opportunities annually to train overseas. Recent overseas training exercises which Not Det ranks have participated in have been included:

July 2010 – Ex Commando Strike - California USA.
February 2011 – Ex Hairspring – Norway.
July 2011 - Ex Commando Strike – Falkland Islands.

Not Det is keen to increase its numbers and welcomes interest from ex-regulars, civilians and other members of the reserve forces. Tuesday 15th May 2012
Tuesday 3rd July 2012

If you wish to attend please arrive at 1930 hours for a 2000 hours start. Attending a presentation and beginning the application process early will allow time for interested parties to complete the Armed Forces Careers Office (AFCO) process prior to the selection weekends due to be held in May and September 2012. The application process and vetting takes approx 2-3 months to complete. The Detachment trains Tuesday evenings 1930-2200hrs at HMS Sherwood.

Anyone interested in joining the RMR at Nottingham detachment, whether as an ex-regular/reservist or as a potential recruit should contact the recruiting SNCO on 0800 783 9529. Alternatively you can contact the Detachment at HMS Sherwood on Tuesday evening by visiting or calling (0115) 929 6373.
