Royal naval reserves
The Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) is an integral part of Britain’s naval forces, comprising a corps of some 3,250 men and women who train in peacetime to enable the Royal Navy to meet its operational commitments in times of stretch, crisis, tension and war.
HMS Sherwood is one of 14 RNR Units found across the UK. The unit is based in Nottingham and it provides a focus for RNR training and activity in the East Midlands.
Although some 25% of RNR personnel have previously served in the Royal Navy, the majority of our reservists come from all walks-of-life and all corners of this area of England and use the unit as a base to begin and then develop their RNR career. It’s a welcoming and vibrant environment in which to learn new skills, make friends and take on exciting challenges.
The role is one you can do in your spare time, but you can get a lot out of it. For some people it can help shape their civilian career, for others it could be a stepping stone to a full-time career in the Royal Navy, and some join because it offers a great social life and the chance to take part in a fantastic range of sports and activities.
Plenty of options
There is a wide variety of roles available in the Royal Naval Reserves, from logistics to seamen, medical and nursing opportunities to analysing and reporting on defence intelligence. Whatever role you do, at whatever rank, being a Reservist is a great way to develop leadership and teamwork skills and enhance your management ability.
With the support of the unit’s full-time and part-time staff you can develop a professionally satisfying part time career with the RNR and in time you have good opportunities to serve with your fulltime RN colleagues in the UK or to deploy on operations overseas.
Get paid
Unlike most volunteer roles, once enrolled as a Royal Navy Reservist you will get paid for any training and work that you do.
An added bonus
If you complete your minimum training commitment satisfactorily you can also benefit from an annual tax-free bounty. This currently ranges from £416 in your first year rising incrementally up to £1,641 after five years.
Training Night
Tuesday 7-30pm to 9-30pm.
Actively seeking new recruits!
We welcome enquiries from all potential recruits, including ex-Service personnel, irrespective of ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation or social background.
